he is interrupted on his way out of AREA ZERO, exhausted from having spent the night keeping watch with sylvie faust only to be met with one PARADOX POKEMON after another. as capable of a trainer as he is, he has his limits.[break][break]

in this case, his limits revolve around his cacturne. should the grass-type fall, he's done for.[break][break]

though he was supposed to work with JAMES BAKER all the way through, he finds a way to make an excuse to split off when he catches sight of a familiar individual.

"boy!" a shout calls dane.

his typhlosion runs alongside him. an eruption causes the nearby area to alight on fire, creating a temporary barrier between the apradox pokemon and the cacturne.

"the fuck are you doin' here?!"

his pokemon gets ahead of dane's, standing as the first line of defense against the slither wing.

"aren't ya supposed to be back home?" they had met at johto after being part of the same organization.

remnants of the past always catch up to him regardless of what he does. he already had decided to stay off from most of the action, but still, they find themselves to him.

not expecting to run into anyone familiar, especially not someone from johto, dane looks over, heart dropping to his stomach at the sight of wolfgang volkov, friend and once colleague, but still friend, nonetheless.[break][break]

his smile is slightly strained but genuine as he watches them approach. his cacturne keeps a careful gaze over the typhlosion.[break][break]

he throws a light jab at his shoulder.

"i'm leavin' ya right here, right now. come on, typh-" he was about to say typhy. "typhlosion."

the paradox pokemon in front of them was a bad match up for a cacturne, moreso when they consider the flames left by his typhlosion.

before the pokemon can turn its back, the slither wing powers through the flames and attempts an attack. a click of the tongue voices the trainer's annoyance with the situation as the pokemon fires back with an inferno.

"i don't think my apartment allows for pets, but i can ask them if i can keep you," he fires back, knowing an exit isn't possible with the current situation.

he snorts at the joke but it's halfhearted at best, his attention stretched too thin as he has to swap back to make sure cacturne is supported. he does, however, return a quip as he tosses the empty potion bottle into his backpack instead of on the ground.[break][break]

"how'd you get in then?"[break][break]

the INFERNO lights up the scene, buying cacturne enough time to recover. it whips up a SANDSTORM, keeping them covered.[break][break]

"i'm here permanently. most likely in mauville."[break][break]

"i'm part of the first wave," he answers in the midst of danger. "but they let me out."

cutting him off was an easy decision once they used blackwell's death as a smokescreen for their decision to hide. someone disagreeable wasn't an asset for an organization rebuilding itself.

with enough distraction from the paradox pokemon, he takes dane by the arm and tugs him away. he lets go of his hand soon after.

"you're not part of it still, are you?" he asks.

there was no contact left for him inside the organization to confirm it, and he prefers it that way.

the organization he works for was ran by the league's councilman. secrets like this meant life or death, though it wouldn't be the first time he would teeter in the line between them

"just... make sure you stay safe."

he wants to vomit after accidentally saying those sequence of words.
